The Origin Box: Coffee Island Brings Coorg, India, to Athens
On the occasion of World Coffee Day, Coffee Island unveiled a collectible box filled with aromas, rare varieties and stories of producers from Coorg, India.

For one evening, Stadiou Street became the meeting point of two different coffee cultures. On September 30, on the occasion of World Coffee Day, Coffee Island presented The Origin Box at its store at 7 Stadiou Street, a collectible box created in collaboration with The Coorg Coffee Club, bringing five limited micro-lots from five family-run farms in Coorg to Greece for the first time.

Journalists, creators and Coffee Island partners had the opportunity to discover the coffees in the collection up close, as well as the people and techniques behind each batch. At the centre of the event was Karumbaiah Bolcaranda, founder of The Coorg Coffee Club and himself the producer of one of the coffees included in the box. He spoke about Indian coffee culture, the history of the region and the modern processing methods now being adopted by some of Coorg’s most experimental producers.

As part of the activities organised to present the project, Coffee Island’s store at 4 Vasilissis Amalias Avenue was also visited by India’s Ambassador to Greece, Ravi Shankar, highlighting the collaboration’s strong Indian identity and its connection to the country’s coffee culture.

The Origin Box itself feels more like a small journey to the place of origin than a simple collection of coffees. It contains five different batches from five family-owned estates, each with its own variety, harvest and processing technique. The collection features both Arabica and Canephora, as well as the exceptionally rare Excelsa from Thimcar Estate, one of the box’s most distinctive offerings.

The experience becomes even more intriguing when one considers that these are genuinely limited quantities. The coffees were produced as exclusive micro-lots specifically for this collaboration, meaning that once the batches are sold out, they will not be released again in the same form.
Behind this rarity, however, lies considerable expertise. In Coorg, families who have been cultivating coffee for generations combine their experience with more modern, almost laboratory-like approaches. Natural Anaerobic and Honey Process Anaerobic methods, controlled fermentation and continuous experimentation transform the aromatic intensity, sweetness and overall character of each coffee. Tradition and science thus meet within the same batch, without either one undermining the other.

The choice of Coorg is anything but accidental. Coffee Island has already established ties with India through its presence in the country, and the collaboration with The Coorg Coffee Club comes as a natural continuation of this relationship. At the same time, it gives Greek consumers access to coffees that had never previously reached Greece.

And perhaps this is where the project’s greatest value lies. Five small family-run farms in India, five different micro-lots and five stories can now travel all the way from Evros to Crete, bringing with them much more than simply a different flavour profile. They convey a sense of place, the people behind the coffee, their techniques and a different perspective on specialty coffee.

On the occasion of World Coffee Day, The Origin Box thus serves as a welcome reminder that behind every espresso, filter coffee or V60, there is always a journey. And sometimes, that journey begins a long way away—in the lush green estates of Coorg—and ends in a cup of coffee in the heart of Athens.
