4,600 JOBS, 390 FRANCHISE PARTNERS, 1 VISION OF SUSTAINABILITY – COFFEE ISLAND’S ESG REPORT
We are the first Greek coffee chain to publish a Sustainability Report for the years 2022–2023, staying true to our strategic pillars: People, Environment, and Product.
For 25 years, we have consistently invested in sustainable development and continuous improvement, driven by a deep love for quality coffee.
With a meaningful contribution to Greek society and the economy, we present our first ESG Report, expressing our commitment to ethical business practices. With consistency and compliance at every operational level, we have maintained zero incidents of corruption and regulatory violations. We actively support the Greek economy by paying taxes in Greece and sustaining more than 4,600 jobs across our network. By supporting our 390 franchise partners and our consumers, we strengthened business resilience by absorbing the majority of inflationary pressures and price increases during 2022–2023.
Committed to the Environment
Adopting innovative circular economy practices, we collaborate with Coffee Eco to recycle coffee residues and transform them into sustainable products such as cosmetics and bioplastics. In its first year of operation, Coffe-Eco processed 50 tons of coffee residues from Coffee Island roasteries, equivalent to 9 tons of emitted carbon dioxide (CO2).
To further reduce our environmental footprint, we choose recycled materials, meeting our packaging needs with 131.66 tons of recycled materials—doubling their use within two years while simultaneously reducing the volume of discarded and recyclable waste.
At the same time, we are investing in photovoltaic installations, covering 50% of the energy needs of our headquarters and 64% at our factory in the Patras Industrial Area.
Committed to People
Our commitment to people and communities extends nationwide through the support of social grocery stores, food programs, educational, athletic, and cultural initiatives.
Supporting our people is a key factor in our positive trajectory. That is why, within a safe working environment, we implement a dynamic framework of benefits, training, and empowerment for everyone in our chain. In total, we have delivered 120,360 hours of training to baristi, franchisees, and employees, while maintaining zero reports or complaints regarding discrimination, harassment, or violations of human and labor rights.
Committed to the Product
We collaborate with 26 farms in 12 countries, thereby supporting local farmers’ income and promoting responsible practices. Linking coffee sourcing from specific farms with sustainable development actions, we partner with the organization Water to Thrive to construct a well in Sidama, Ethiopia, providing clean water to 500 people. At the same time, through our partnership with the Gisanga farm in Rwanda, we support women farmers by ensuring more opportunities for them and their families, contributing to a better quality of life.
By maintaining in-house production facilities, we guarantee the quality of our products with ISO 22000 and Halal certifications, while we have recently obtained certification for organic production and organic product labeling. Consistently, during the period 2021–2023, we recorded zero incidents of non-compliance, highlighting our commitment to safety and responsibility.
