World Coffee Day: Coffee Island Introduces a Rare Side of Specialty Coffee from Coorg, India

A collectible box featuring five rare and limited-edition coffees from five family-owned farms in Coorg, India, brings together Arabica, Canephora and the exceptionally rare Excelsa, one of the standout varieties in the collection.

Journalists, creators and Coffee Island partners gathered to experience the five coffees firsthand, discover their origins and meet the people behind them, while exploring the science behind every cup. Karumbaiah Bolcaranda, founder of The Coorg Coffee Club and a producer of one of the coffees featured in the collection, spoke about India’s coffee culture and the pioneering processing methods adopted by some of Coorg’s most innovative farms.

As part of the activities surrounding the launch of “The Origin Box”, the Coffee Island store at 4 Vasilissis Amalias Avenue, in Syntagma, Athens, was also visited by His Excellency the Ambassador of India to Greece, Mr Ravi Shankar, highlighting the project’s connection with India and the country’s distinctive coffee culture.

What makes “The Origin Box” stand out lies both in its varieties and in the unique origins of its coffees. Each of the five coffees comes from a specific family-owned farm and a family of producers, with its own variety, harvest and processing method. Among the highlights is the Excelsa from Thimcar Estate, alongside distinct expressions of Specialty Arabica and Canephora.

As these are genuinely limited quantities, sourced from micro-lots, the availability of “The Origin Box” depends exclusively on these specific batches. Once they are sold out, the same batches will not be released again.

Behind every coffee lies generations of knowledge and experience. In Coorg, families who have been cultivating coffee for generations combine tradition with modern, pioneering processing techniques, such as Natural Anaerobic and Honey Process Anaerobic. Through controlled anaerobic fermentation, producers work with precision to bring out each coffee’s distinctive characteristics, revealing a diverse range of aromatic profiles. Tradition, science and experimentation thus come together in every batch.

With “The Origin Box”, Coffee Island is bringing coffees to Greek consumers for the first time that have never before been available in the country. Drawing on its expertise and extensive network, the company is making rare varieties and limited micro-lots from family-owned farms in Coorg accessible to a much wider audience.

Originating from small family farms in India, each coffee carries its own provenance, the story of its producers and a unique heritage. These five micro-lots can now reach coffee lovers across Greece, from Evros in the north to Crete in the south, offering them the opportunity to discover something truly exceptional.

The collaboration with The Coorg Coffee Club also marks a continuation of Coffee Island’s presence in India, bringing the stories and expertise of Coorg’s coffee producers to Greek audiences.
